Hibiscus Syriacus (Rose Of Sharon) is a deciduous shrub which produces flowers in shades of pink, red, blue and purple, just to mention a few. Tolerant of heat and humidity, attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, and bypassed by deer, Hibiscus are a must-have for the sunny garden.
Hibiscus Syriacus plants grow approximately 8–12 feet high, with a spread of 6–10 feet and produce 2- to 4-inch blooms from midsummer throughout the fall.
Rose of Sharon thrives in full sun, in rich well-drained soil that's acidic to slightly alkaline and evenly moist.
Prune to shape in spring and cut back to 2 - 3 buds in late winter to get bigger blooms.
Fertilize the hibiscus every two weeks during the growing season.
The Rose of Sharon is a low maintenance, hardy perennial once established.

PLANTING GUIDE:
Plant the seeds outside: in spring after danger of frost has passed – plant them around 0.6 – 1.2 cm (1/4 – 1/2 inch) deep in an area that gets full sun, and seedlings should emerge later in the spring.
Alternatively, start the plants indoors:
- Sow hibiscus seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last spring frost date.
-
Use a seed starting kit.
- Soak seeds in room temperature water for about 8 hours to speed germination.
- Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed-starting formula (sterile potting mix). Lightly cover the seed as they need light to germinate.
- Keep the soil moist but not soaked at 75-80 degrees F.
- Keep the seeds warm, in a sunny south-facing spot and the seeds should germinate in 2-4 weeks.
- After seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves with the stems having begun to harden and become woody, the young Hibiscus plant can be moved to larger pots or to a protected place in the garden.
- New plants need a few days to adapt to the sun. So, bring them to the sun progressively over several days.
